JAE 404 Ajello Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. This is an English piano. Re-polished to a modern finish matching its modern compact design. This will certainly be a conversation piece! DE 284 Allison Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number 19496 (on key); 36 (on frame). This piano was manufactured in London in around 1960, has aa mahogany casing and is in original condition. This is a lovely piano with an unusual look. It is the sort of piano which can easily be underrated as people don’t know the brand well, but it’s got everything a good piano should have and exceeds the quality and tone of many more highly considered brands. The tone is lively and pleasant. It has 85 keys – with a medium touch weight – and 2 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are a height of 108 cm, width of 138 cm and a depth of 56 cm.

JAE 407 Allison Upright Pianoforte with stool. This piano was manufactured in London. It is a lovely, small piano with interesting legs. Due to wear on the casing the piano was painted with a chalk paint red (June 2017). Its dimensions are: height of 109 cm, width of 138 cm and depth of 55.5 cm.

JAE 602 Allison Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. This iano was manufactured in London. Allison pianos are sturdy pianos and have a great reputation. This Allison was built in the late 1950’s, has only had one owner since new. It is a nice, compact-designed upright with modern proportions. It has mahogany casing.

Arthur Alison Upright Piano with stool. Built in the 1920’s. Termed amongst others, “Dracula’s Piano”, this is one of apparently two such pianos built. In an ebony casing, with ornate brass work, this would have been for exhibition when built. In the Eshelby’s long history in the piano trade, such a piano has not been known before. This is an opportunity to own something unique. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 130.5 cm, width of 150 cm and a depth of 73 cm. The Eshelby’s owned this piano, sold it in the early 2000’s, were extremely fortunate to have been given the opportunity to purchase it back and then sold it again in September 2016 (previously referenced JAE 315).

DE 265 Arion Upright Pianoforte with stool.

The bold and detailed structure makes it a centre-piece. The varied mahogany casing matches the old-style adornments. An unusual feature is the handles on the sides of the piano that are for decorative purposes only. It has been fully restored and is a wonderful example of how if ones cares for an item, its value will last more than a lifetime.

Baldwin Acrosonic

JAE 448 Baldwin Acrosonic Upright Pianoforte and stool. Serial number: 410175. This piano was manufactured in New York, U.S.A. Baldwin is one of America’s oldest and well-respected factories. This Acrosonic model is a Spinet style piano with an exceptionally unusual and attractive aesthetic. It retains it’s rather pretty, original and matching stool. This is an unusual piano with a small footprint which would suit a contemporary household. The top right photo is before the piano was painted. We have refinished it in Annie Sloan chalk paint, in a shade of grey, which reflects beautifully in differing shades depending on the light. The piano has 88 keys with a very pleasant, ‘solid’ feel. Because of the way the action operates in a Spinet piano, one pulls the hammers forward on the keys, so they can feel very positive and more like a grand piano in touch. This is a nice touch to become accustomed to. The piano has 3 pedals, the middle pedal operates the bass dampers only and is not a mute pedal as on some uprights. This piano’s dimensions are: height of 91 cm, width of 150.5 cm and depth of 65 cm.

JAE 628 Baldwin Acrosonic Upright Pianoforte and stool. Importantly, this is a standard height piano known as a Console model; most Acrosonics we have seen are of the Spinet version. This is a remarkable piano of a very high quality and finish,  with a lively and substantial tone. We feel it rivals any American made piano that we have tried, including a very similar model from arguably the best maker of pianos in the world. The staining of the case is to a mahogany colour, although the veneer is a figured walnut with very beautiful graining. The immense detail on the piano make it extremely attractive and must have cost a premium when new. The piano has 88 keys (with ivory), with a medium to lighter touch, and 3 pedals. The middle pedal lifts the bass dampers and is not a dampening pedal. The dimensions of this piano are a height of 112 cm, a width of 145,5 cm and a depth of 65 cm.

Bansall & Son: London, England, 1883.DE 947 Bansall Grand Pianoforte with stool.

This grand pianoforte was built in the 1930’s, and has been re-polished with white finish.

It is rather unusual to have an ornate, small grand – on barley-twist legs.

The piano has been extensively restored, including a new pin-block, restring (bass and treble wire), new hammers and so on. It has a roller action.

DE 504 C. Bechstein Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 87947. Manufactured in Germany in the early 1900’s this premier quality piano from a renowned manufacturer. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 130 cm; a width of 146.5 cm and a depth of 60 cm.

It has 85 keys, with a medium to heavier touch, and 2 pedals.  The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 116.5 cm, width of 149 cm and a depth of 57 cm.

JAE 613 Bechstein Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number 94050. This Model 10 Bechstein has a polished, stained black casing (March 2017).This piano’s dimensions are: height of 129 cm, width of 146 cm and depth of 60 cm.

JAE 622 C. Bechstein Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 127392. This Model 8 was manufactured in Germany in 1926. This piano was re-polished to a black finish (November 2015). This is the top of the line in upright pianos, referred to by the makers as a Concert Upright. With unsurpassed quality, it is a real collectors piece. Replacement value in new would run well into the R 300 000.00 range. We do our best to acquire such pianos, but they are scarcely seen on the market. It is a gem of a piano, possibly our best. Its tone is semi-bright in being lively, but retaining the full-bodied richness of a German piano. The tone is fantastic! The piano has 88 keys, with a very smooth medium to lighter touch, and 2 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 128 cm, a width of 156 cm and a depth of 63 cm.

If you are looking for an upright piano that cannot be beaten, and will always command interest and rarity, as well as one that can be played by the best pianists and inspire anyone else too, this is surely one of the best choices one could make. It has a wonderfully rich tone – while maintaining a cheerful clarity at the same time – and magnificent bass…The piano has 88 keys (ivory) – with a medium to lighter touch – and 2 pedals. The dimensions are: a height of 130 cm, a width of 156,5 cm and a depth of 63 cm.

DE 747 Bechstein Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 142751; Model 8 “Concert Upright”. We can proudly offer this magnificent piano for sale. Built in 1938, at the very peak of what many consider the Golden Age of piano building, this must have been one of the last pre-war pianos out of this famous factory. Model 8 Bechstein pianos are highly sought after and are very rare. The piano has 88 keys – Ivory naturals. At merely the price of a far more readily available (new) Eastern upright, this really deserves consideration, a piano like this is probably a good R 600 000.00 new. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 126 cm; a width of 156.5 cm and a depth of 63.5 cm.

DE 778 C. Bechstein Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 97529. This Model 8 upright piano was built in Berlin, Germany, in 1910. The piano has a re-polished Rosewood casing. This piano’s condition is excellent throughout. This is a collector’s piece, of a brand synonymous with quality piano building. Treat yourself! The tone is an incredible balance of a full rich sound with the ability for brightness as well. The keys are original and superb ivory. The piano has 88 keys – with a medium to lighter touch – and 2 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 130 cm, a width of 156.5 cm and a depth of 63 cm.

DE 799 Bechstein Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Built in 1896, serial number 35393, case number R d 206 403, it is an overstrung, underdamper with a mahogany casing. This really is a special and rare piano – the only one that Eshelby Pianos has ever had and we endevour to conservatively restore it to retain its original personality and charm. The piano is an Arts and Crafts style of piano as designed by Walter Cave, English Architect and Interior Designer. Its case features sculptural candlesticks and ornate hinges; it has cabinet features and an ornate fretwork panel in a floral design behind its appealing music desk.

Bechstein Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Model 8, made in 1963 in Germany. Serial number 154482. Our company sold this pisno about 10 years ago. At that time it was one of the best and rarest pianos that we had had in stock, and in all the years since, I have not been able to buy another similar model, and have only seen one other in the course of my tuning work. Ridiculously expensive new, these pianos reflect every aspect of the German history and quality in the piano trade. The piano is all origional internally, and has a re-polished high-gloss ebony casing. Absolutely one of the very best upright pianos for sale in the world. This piano was sold in 2016.

C. Bechstein Upright Pianoforte with stool (Hire reference: JAE 326). This is a Model 8 upright that was built in the early 1900 s in Germany. This is Bechstein’s “Concert” upright piano, being the top of the range upright. We love these particular uprights, they surpass many grand pianos in tone and general feel.

They are very scarce, and we try to buy them up enthusiastically when they do come on to the market, as they are so hard to get, and are always a good investment. This one is in a satin-black casing, and retains its ivory keys, and almost all of its originality.

The piano is being offered in a condition where we can offer the same guarantee and assurances as per any of our pianos, but has some case imperfections, as well as internal ones.

If this was to be our own piano, we would choose it as-is, as opposed to being restored, as one will get the same sort of use from this example as one would get from a restored one, at much less cost.

This affords a serious player who cannot afford such a top of the line piano the opportunity to play a much higher quality instrument than would otherwise be possible. This piano was osld in September 2016.

This piano has the typical bold music desk that one expects from a Bechstein, this one is referred to as a hanging desk. The reason that they do this on an the uprights is to mimic the position f the music notes on a grand piano. Bernhard Steiner: The Bernhard Steiner factory has a rather interesting background. Primarily based in South Africa, the Kahn Family purchased a number of piano manufacturing factories as well as parts from various factories to create or re-label pianos, “Bernhard Steiner”. As one can see from the various Bernhard Steiner pianos listed, some are very obviously actually other piano makes that have been re-labelled from various countries in the world. Although there are other piano manufactories with the name of Bernard, Bernard Steiner falls under Dietman (See Dietman).

Berhard Steiner Upright and stool. Serial numbers: 71368 and 259564. This piano has an exceptionally unusual oak case with much detail. This is the only one of this model we have ever had. As Bernhard Steiner is a brand name rather than a factory we can only presume this is a piano from the well known Dietmann factory. The condition is superb without any case damage or internal wear to speak of. The polish has patina type wear of a crackeleur sort, but we feel this adds character and should not be seen as a fault, see the photo attached where we have attempted to show this… However, the purchaser wanted a bolder appearance and had a unique vision of how this piano should look and we are currently painting this piano with a dark grey-brown undercoat, a middle coat of Granny B’s Candy Floss pink and a top coat of Celtic Mist green. We are currently in the process of distressing the piano. The piano has 88 keys, with a medium touch weight, and 3 pedals. Its dimensions are: a height of 113 cm; a width of 148.5 cm and a depth of 56 cm. Previously referenced DE 775, this piano was bespoke painted for a client and sold in 2022.

Blüthner, Julius: made by Veb Bluthner Pianos in Liepzig, Germany.

DE 524 Julius Blüthner Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 87560. This piano was manufactured in Liepzig, Germany. We painted this piano with a dark grey shade of chalk paint (March 2020). The current photos show it during the restoration process.  It most unusually has its original candelabra shown, but not fitted, in one of the photos. One rarely sees these extremely fine pianos. This is of a straight strung design with magnificent, mellow and rich tone. Blüthner specialises in creating a specific sound, which is powerful without any harshness. No original Blüthner could ever be accused of being tinny. They are overall our personal favourite in terms of quality and tone, a favourite instrument for accompaniment. It retains its ivory keys in excellent condition. Really the best one can get, it ought to be listed in the “I can’t believe it’s possible to hire a piano of this standard ” category. It has 85 keys, with a medium to heavier weight touch, and 2 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 130 cm, a width of 148.5 cm and a depth of 68 cm.

DE 722 Blüthner Upright pianoforte with stool. This 1.21 m tall piano was manufactured in Liepzig, Germany in 1953. It has a walnut casing and is a very refined style with the added detail in the top panel and curved legs. This is that latest model Bluthner upright that we have stocked; to find a post war Bluthner like this is exceptional. It is probably one of the only ones in South Africa. The piano has a rich, but powerful, medium to brighter tone; 88 keys – with a heavier touch – and 2 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 121 cm, a width of 153 cm and a depth of 62.5 cm.

DE 744 Blüthner, Julius Upright Pianoforte and stool. Serial number 197746. This piano was manufactured in Leipzig, Germany.
On balance, a great Blüthner is certainly one of our very favourite pianos. The extreme quality is something to appreciate, just the way they fit together, the perfect quality of parts and materials and severe craftsmanship is amazing.
We always jump at an opportunity to buy one, however many older models have action designs no longer desirable to a serious pianist, so when one like this becomes available we are very keen buyers. This is a tall model Blüthner, its dimensions are: a height of 128 cm, width of 149 cm and a depth of 69 cm.
It is about to begin a restoration to include re-polishing the case to a high gloss black, fitting a new set of hammers and much more. It will fortunately retain its ivory keyboard, (85 keys) and the “back” requires no work, as everything is solid, currently without a single replacement part.

DE 941 Blüthner Grand Pianoforte and stool. Serial number: 134677. This piano was manufactured in  Leipzig, Germany, in 1961. We have just purchased this piano (January 2020) and will be undertaking restoration as required as well as re-polishing to black.  This is possibly our own favourite grand piano. We love the superb quality of a Blūthner and this particular size seems just perfect to achieve a fabulous rich tone unique to the make, with beautiful proportions in casing and design. We have not had a later model in stock. This model also has the Aliquot scaling which is a Blüthner invention whereby and extra string is applied to the treble sections, giving a rounder and amplified tone. They were built to have a gentle but rich sound and have long been a favourite accompanist’s piano. The condition is magnificently original. The ivory keyboard is superb. This is a very rare find and a world class piano. The piano has 88 keys and two pedals. The dimensions of this piano are a length of 190 cm and a width of 150.5 cm.

Blüthner Grand Pianoforte with matching stool. This piano was produced in Liepzig, Germany. Serial number: 120 006. It has flame-mahogany casing. Our firm sold this piano around 20 years ago. Having purchased it back, we undertook an internal restoration (including restringing of the treble with new steel, new hammerheads and so on) as well as re-polished the piano (re-polished photos to be added soon) and sold it. Bluthner pianos deliver uncompromising quality, and a very special, unique tone. Previously referenced DE 938, this piano was sold in June 2019.

Blüthner Grand pianoforte and stool. This piano has a flame-mahogany casing, re-finished July 2016. It has beautiful, original ivory keys. The piano has new hammers, but the soundboard and internals are as original. Pianos like this are increasingly rare, and always carry the lineage of one of the most reputable firms in the piano world.

We are finding more and more customers, tired of the offerings of new pianos in our market, looking for pianos of heritage and quality, like this. They have a charm and character that one cannot reproduce, and have the warm, rich tone that German pianos are famous for. There are only so-many pianos like this in the world, often a customer who has never considered an older piano, will be easily swayed by trying something like this. This piano was sold in July 2016.

Bösendorfer

DE 942 Bösendorfer Grand Pianoforte and stool. Serial number: 27780. This piano was manufactured in Vienna, Austria, in 1957. We are fortunate enough to have found and purchased this piano from this Fabled maker who has become one of Austria’s most famous exports. In the world of pianos, we do not think any single brand has achieved the notoriety and esteem that Bösendorfer has. They are extremely rare. Referencing the Pierce Piano Atlas, in the decade in which our piano was manufactured, the factory produced just over 1000 instruments, averaging just 100 a year. If one then considers that only some of these pianos manufactured were grands, how many can exist and how incredibly few must have made it to Africa? This example has been in family ownership for decades and was reluctantly offered for sale by the family of the Late owner. It appears as all original. The sapele mahogany casing is now being re-polished to a high gloss black, as we feel the sapele look is less appealing to modern buyers. The wood has however been sealed prior to ebonising so could be returned in years to come. The silky feel of the action is quite astonishing, with a fairly light touch not found on most grand piano actions. The ivory keys are in superb condition – as is the whole mechanism. This is a proper treasure. Deon has, in his 30 years of experience in the trade, only had two Bösendorfer pianos for resale.  The piano is 170 cm in length.

Broadwood, John & Son, LTD.: London, England. Originally associated with harpsichords, then square pianos, making more pianos than harpsichords by 1784. John Broadwood had worked in Tschaudis shop, married Tschudi’s daughter, Barbara, and the name changed to Tschudi & Broadwood. Broadwood made many improvements to pianos, like the brass under-damper that made the square much more stable. In the late 1700’s, pianos replaced harpsichords (the last year that Broadwood made harpsichords was 1793) and grand pianos started being manufactured. In 1795, his eldest son James admitted to Company and name changed to Broadwood and Son. In 1808, the firm changed to John Broadwood & Sons as John Broadwood’s second son, Thomas, joined. In 1812, John died. Last square piano made in 1866, overtaken in the home by the ‘cottage upright’. There is a very interesting history of the John Broadwood and Sons Manufacturers at: http://www.broadwood.co.uk/history.html.
