This is a very special, extremely high-quality piano – something special for the person who values the craftsmanship, feel and tone of a traditional German instrument. A further indication of quality is that it is fitted with a Renner action and keys. It has a mahogany casing and is in its original guise. It has 88 keys, with a medium to heavier touch, and 2 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 114 cm, width of 144 cm and a depth of 59 cm.

It has a rich, but brighter, tone quality; 88 keys – with a medium weight touch – and 3 pedals (the middle pedal a sostenuto rail to muffle the sound). The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 105 cm, a width of 146.5 cm and a depth of 54.5 cm. We will add better photographs as time allows.
JAE 615 K. Kawai Upright (Rebranded Bernhard Steiner) Pianoforte and stool. Serial number: K1023. This piano was manufactured in Japan. It is a professional quality piano in excellent condition. The high gloss mahogany case is original, and very smart, but has a few hairline cracks in it, which we just don’t feel are worth fixing as they are not noticeable unless you are looking for them. This piano has 88 keys, with a medium to firm touch, and 3 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 108 cm, width of 143 cm and a depth of 58 cm.

JAE 626 Kawai (relabelled Hoffman & Kuhne) Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number 83087. Manufactured in Japan, this piano has a walnut casing and is a Console Upright Piano (which means that it is a medium-sized piano, not a Spinet). It is really a lovely-looking, small, premier-quality piano.
DE 704 K. Kawai (Re-branded: Bernhard Steiner) Upright Pianoforte with stool. This piano has three pedals and a walnut casing. These are very pleasant, good quality pianos, comparable to some of the Japanese type pianos available. It has a nice mid-range touch and would suit a serious player or teacher in terms of quality. The piano has 3 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 107 cm, width of 145 cm and a depth of 59 cm.

DE 727 K. Kawai Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 346942. This is a very attractive and very compact piano in a walnut casing. Kawai is a well-considered piano manufacturer; it is a popular make of pianos due to the quality of the manufacture and clearness of tone, which is generally brighter. The action would suit a more serious pianist as well as a beginner. The manufacturer is ever-increasing in popularity in South Africa. The piano has 88 keys, with a medium weight touch, and 3 pedals. The centre pedal operates a sostenuto/practice rail for minimising sound which is especially useful in a small space or apartment situation. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 98 cm, a width of 143 cm and a depth of 52 cm.

Kawai is a well-recognised and respected piano-maker. This would be a wonderful option for anyone wanting a small piano which retains a good tone and importantly has a good action and touch sought by a more serious player. The piano has 88 keys and dimensions of: a height of 96 cm, width of 150 cm and a depth of 54.5 cm.
DE 750 K. Kawai Upright Pianoforte and stool. Serial number: K1229729; Model CE-8N. This piano was manufactured in Japan and has a high-gloss ebony casing. The piano only had one owner and has been in Johannesburg since purchased as a new piano. It was reluctantly traded in to offset the cost on a grand piano. The piano is in original, good condition and was regularly maintained and tuned. It has 88 keys with a medium touch and three pedals. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 113 cm, width of 148 cm and a depth of 58 cm.
DE 754 K. Kawai (Re: Bernhard Steiner) Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 341874. This piano is a K. Kawai that was rebranded Bernhard Steiner. With a typical Kawai, this piano can easily measure-up to any other Eastern-manufactured one, with a richer tone than most – suiting any more serious player. It has a re-polished mahogany casin, 88 keys – with a a medium touch – and 2 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 115 cm, a width of 146 cm and a depth of 62 cm.
DE 772 K. Kawai (Re-labelled Bernhard Steiner) Upright Pianoforte and stool. This piano was manufactured in Japan. This piano has been re-polished to a high gloss black finish (November 2019). Zoom in on these photos to see what a high gloss black finish should look like – the casing reflects the background like a mirror. These are ever-popular pianos with a wonderful reputation. The piano has a good, all round tone, of a richer, warmer sound than many of its competitors, certainly something many appreciate. DE 784 Kawai Upright Pianoforte and stool. Serial number: 1880508. This Model CX-9 was manufactured in Japan in 1989. It has the expected modern styling in gloss black and has the original stool. It is a superb example of the make and feels solidly well-built and of quality. The condition is entirely original and very much unused. With excellent bright – yet rich – tone and strong bass, it really does make one look twice at how such a powerful sound is achieved in a smaller piano. The piano is well worth a look for anyone, but is suitablefor a very accomplished player as well. It has 88 keys; a medium to heavier touch with great response and 3 pedals. The dimensions are: a height 109 cm, a width of 145.5 cm and a depth of 53 cm.
Kawai Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number 33885. This is a model KX-21 Yamaha piano. Indicated by the previous owner to be about six years old this piano is as new as one could hope to find on the market. Finished in a high gloss mahogany of a dark brown, rather than a traditionally red stain. Magnificent, practically unused condition. We do not come across offerings like this often. The Kawai brand has an excellent quality standard and reputation. The tone is superb and makes one wonder how the factory achieves such a powerful sound. The bass is especially strong. It has 88 keys. This piano’s dimensions are: height of 121 cm, width of 150 cm and depth of 56.5 cm. This piano, previously referenced DE 789, was sold in March 2018.

These specific models are one of our favourites and will suit any player up to a serious level because the touch and action response is that of a high-quality instrument. Model KG1 L8, serial number: 519 581. This piano was built in Japan in 1971 and has a high-gloss ebony casing.
One previous owner since new. The piano required no more than a good service since we purchased it – the condition is virtually as new.
Kawai (Re-labelled Otto Bach) Grand Pianoforte with stool.
Model 330; Serial number 358 723, built in 1968 in Japan. This piano had a walnut casing, but has been re-polished to a high gloss white finish (February 2018) and is a nice example of this well-known make. These earlier models have a richness of tone that has great appeal. It is a really good, well-priced piano to suit a wide range of pianists, good enough for professional use. The dimensions are a length of 155 cm and a width of 149 cm. Previously referenced DE 908, this piano was sold in 2018.
K. Kawai (Re-branded as a Bernhard Steiner) Grand Pianoforte with stool.
This piano has a walnut casing and is a lovely instrument producing a warm tone. It is suitable for professional-standard use. It is a KG 2 size. This piano was sold in December 2016.

Kemble Piano Group: English makers of Kemble, Brinsmead, Cramer, B. Squire & Son, Squire & Longson, Rogers Eungblut, Moore and Moore, & Renn., Stoke Newington, Minx, Schmidt-Florh since 1977. Kemble pianos are often suggested as an easy choice and reliable pianos by piano teachers. Of the many that we have dealt with over the years, we have found them very popular in both looks and function.
JAE 05 Kemble Upright Pianoforte with Matching Stool. Serial number: 77291.
This piano was manufactured in London in 1947. These are one of our favourite pianos in general, with a reputation for being hassle free and reliable, with a bright tone.
JAE 17 Kemble Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Manufactured in London. This piano is a royalette style of Kemble. Its structure looks modern but has lovely subtle details on its edging. This is somewhat accentuated by the colour variation in its mahogany casing. Although we have other Kemble pianos with the same royalette style, this one clearly stands out because of this colour variaton. Kemble is one of our favourite makes and models of piano as the make is incredibly reliable and sound in tuning stability, tone and touch.

This piano was manufactured in London. It has a modern design with chromed legs, walnut case, very clean condition. This particular type of Kemble is extremely well liked in the trade. They are very reliable, keep in tune well, and have a light, pleasantly bright tone. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 112.5 cm, width of 134 cm and a depth of 55.5 cm.

It is collectable and sought after due to its very compact and clever design as well as style.
JAE 39 Kemble (relabelled B. Squire) Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number: 89416. This piano has a walnut finish with lovely variation. We see this design and make of piano under many labels, but Kemble is clearly the maker. Its uncluttered appearance suits a contemporary home. We find that these pianos have a great appeal amoung teachers and students. The tone is lively and bright, but not tinny!
JAE 52 Kemble Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. This is a Cameo model upright.
Kemble, a manufacturer of pianos based in London, has been known for their compact design of pianos. Although a smaller piano, it offers the characteristic responsiveness with a clear, bright tone. The top of the piano can be tilted with a top stick as with a grand piano. This add such a lovely character to an upright piano. The piano has a mahogany casing. JAE 60 Kemble Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. This is a royalette style of piano with a light Sepeli mahogany finish. It is a modern-looking English Piano. The keys have a lighter touch weight. This piano’s dimensions are: height of 970 cm, width of 128 cm and depth of 51 cm.

This particular model is referred to as a Century. It is especially small in terms of its footprint, nevertheless retaining a lovely lively tone. The piano’s mahogany casing has been re-polished to a low lustre, natural look (September 2019). It has 85 key notes, with a medium weight touch, and 2 pedals. This piano’s dimensions are: height of 107 cm, width of 131.5 cm and depth of 46.5 cm.
JAE 62 Kemble Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 73813. This small light brown Mini Royal piano was produced in London and has masculine block legs. It has a truly compact design – as small as a piano can be. The Kemble is a make of pianos that piano teachers often suggest for their students. This piano’s dimensions are: height of 88 cm, width of 130 cm and depth of 53 cm.
JAE 73 Kemble (Re-labelled Bernhard Steiner) Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number: 14671. This is a Model K 96 piano in a mahogany casing with cabriole legs. This piano has an interesting feature as its top lifts like a grand piano. It also has a grand piano type music desk. This piano’s dimensions are: height of 101, approximately 142 cm when the top is open, width of 143 cm and depth of 58 cm.
JAE 78 Kemble Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. This Mini Minx piano was manufactured in London in the 1950’s. The extremely compact design makes these pianos a popular choice for smaller homes, bedrooms et cetera. It has a mahogany casing, 85 keys – with a medium weight touch – and 2 pedals. The piano has a very pleasant mid-range tone which is neither too bright nor very mellow. Its dimensions are: height of 88 cm, width of 132 cm and depth of 53 cm.

DE 329 Kemble (re-labelled: Carlton) Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 308223. The Kemble make is quite well known in South Africa as a reliable piano in the intermediate range. There are a variety of models varying in appearance and style, most of which are quite popular. This one has curved details in its greater structure as well as in its the legs which suits the more matted gloss finish of its walnut casing.

This piano was manufactured in London. Kemble is one of our favourite makes and models of piano as it is incredibly reliable and sound in tuning stability, tone and touch, which is of a medium weight.
This one is especially attractive as it is very compact, has cabriole legs and an has an ever-popular darker mahogany casing.

JAE 12 Knight Upright Pianoforte with Stool.
This is a quality, good-looking piano with a mahogany casing. These pianos were assembled in South Africa, as well as in the U.K. They are unusual in their “barless” frame-design, giving them a very full and unbroken tonal range. Also unusual is the fact that Knight pianos are one of the very few to be built largely out of solid timber.

JAE 82 Knight Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number: 6124546. This piano has ball and claw legs, and has an unusual largely solid wood imbuia casing. It is in a very good condition. It has a low-lustre sheen finish, like a hand-waxed finish rather than a lacquer. Knight pianos have an unusual “barless” frame design and high quality build, creating a very even tonal range, and wonderfully rich tone. JAE 98 Knight Upright Pianoforte and stool. Serial number: 4996. This is a fully English built Knight, whereas most Knight pianos in South Africa were assembled locally. We don’t recall having seen another of this design in a walnut casing. It is of a most unusual design – a more modern-looking Knight – and is nicely compact which suits most households. The piano has a wonderfully rich tone unusually found in such a compact piano. It has 88 keys; with a medium, very pleasing touch; and 2 pedals. DE 207 Knight (re-labelled Otto Bach) Upright Pianoforte with Matching Stool. Serial number: 6726043. Knights are one of our favourite pianos, and have a lovely, more gentle but rich tone quality, with a very even tone throughout. This is an especially nice example of the make. We find that this style of Knight, the traditional ball and claw leg design with linin-fold panels, is very popular. This particular piano is refined more so with the gloss polish. This Knight was manufactured in the 1960’s in South Africa. It has an imbuia casing and is elegant with the make’s traditional ball and claw legs and refined linin-fold panels. DE 345 KnightUpright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 642 5677. This piano was manufactured in Essex, England and has a re-polished imbuia casing which looks lovely. The linen fold frame in the front panel and ball and claw legs are very attractive features of this quality piano. DE 388 Knight Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number 618513. Assembled in South Africa, and as with most Knight pianos, is made from mostly solid as opposed to veneered timber, in this case mahogany. It retains its original polish, stool and internals. It would appear to have been a very lightly played piano and obviously well cared for. Knight pianos have a notoriously warm, even tone and are always sought after. It has 88 keys. JAE 422 Knight Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Assembled in South Africa, this piano has a lovely presence and has just (January 2017) been hand-painted to a smooth yellow finish. Knight pianos have a typically appealing, elegant structure together with a reliable build. Although we initially intended on distressing the yellow top coat to reveal the white undercoat, the flat, waxed yellow finish has proved to, although rather boldly, hold its own flair. This is one of those desired furniture items that may hesitate to purchase, but with the option of hiring it, one can exchange it if it doesn’t fit in as well as expected. JAE 439 Knight Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. This piano was painted with white chalk paint (January 2020). It has a slightly washed, lightly distressed look. Although not an expensive make of pianos, Knight is one of our favourite pianos because it is a high quality make and typically has a gentle, but rich, tone throughout. It is a smaller piano that would suit most households, and elegant with its traditional ball and claw legs and refined linin-fold panels.

This piano was manufactured in London, in and has a casing finished with the Morning Mist shade of Rubio Monocoat (May 2019) over the original mahogany casing (photo on the bottom left). The Rubio Monocoat finish gives the casing an almost no-finish look of weathered timber. The look is extremely popular. It has a lovely, lively, yet rich, tone. DE 522 Knight Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 22886. Knight is a lovely make of piano, superior in many ways to their contemporaries in terms of a quality build using quality parts and a wonderfully rich tone without any tinny effects. This piano was manufactured in South Africa. The internals are original and in excellent condition. We re-polished it to a satin black finish in January 2020. The styling suits the black finish well and could suit a contemporary home, or a more traditional one. The satin black is extremely smart and understated as well as being a practical finish to live with. It has 88 keys, with a mid-range touch weight, and 2 pedals. JAE 621 Knight Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 26106. This really lovely little piano is an English-manufactured premier version, with clean lines. It is a smart, modern-looking piano that was re-polished by Eshelby Pianos. The photograph on the left shows the dulled original finish and the photographs on the top right show the revitalised beautiful mahogany casing. The 88 keys, with a medium touch weight, and 2 pedals reveal a rich and lively tone. Its dimensions are: a height of 102 cm, a width of 140 cm and a depth of 53 cm.

DE 785 Kohler & Campbell Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number 582841. The piano was manufactured in the U.S.A. What a nice surprise to find this piano! It is a Console model piano which is taller than a Spinet model, but in keeping with the design features of these ever popular and attractive pieces. This is a relatively modern piano. American pianos have a great reputation for reliability and strength and are built from fantastic quality timber and parts. They very rarely experience the same issues of soundboard and pin block faults which most other pianos are susceptible to in our harsh climate. The piano has a walnut casing with a matching original stool; 88 keys – with a medium to heavier touch weight – and 3 pedals (the centre pedal operating the bass dampers only). The dimensions of this piao are: a height of 105 cm, a width 148,5 cm and a depth 63,5 cm.

This piano has a walnut finish. The top panel has a smart, slight lip over the top front panel, which looks quite unusual. The legs of the piano are have a refined half bow curve.
DE 505 Fritz Kuhla Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 15944; 94736 on keys. We have painted this premier quality piano with two layers of Rust-Oleum Chalk paint: an undercoat of Country Grey and a top coat of Serenity Blue (March 2018). This gives one the option of having a flat colour or having the piano distressed to a French Provincial finish – both are very popular. Fritz Kuhla is a very well-known and quality make of pianos. The ball and claw legs and stylish features of the structure of the piano make them very popular. This piano also has a Renner Action which is a clear indication of quality. 88 keys. DE 721 Fritz Kuhla Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number 14845. This is a model U Fritz Kuhla piano and was manufactured in Germany. It has a light oak casing, which is quite unusual. The piano has 85 keys – with a medium touch weight – and 2 pedals. The dimesions of this piano are: a height of 128 cm, a width of 147 cm and a depth of 62.5 cm.
DE 723 Fritz Kuhla Upright Piano with stool. This piano was built in Langlau, Germany, in 1952. It is a Model U, standing, 1.2m tall. This is one of the few pianos that retains the character and quality of those built pre-war. It has a walnut casing and tropicalised keys.
DE 748 Fritz Kuhla Upright Pianoforte and matching stool. Serial number: 69552. Built in the Dietman Factory as a higher quality offering, this is a South African made example of the Fritz Kuhla brand. It has a Renner action. The mahogany casing has been recently re-polished and it has a matching stool. It has 88 keys and a heavier, firm touch. These are always popular pianos with a good aesthetic and playability, the touch is one that many more serious players and teachers seem to prefer. Fritz Kuhla Upright Pianoforte and stool. Serial number 45124. This is a German built Fritz Kuhla upright with a Renner action. It has a dark, high gloss, walnut casing. This piano appears to have been in a time-warp given it’s comparable-to-new and apparently unused state.From the sound of the tuning when we purchased it in April 2018, I’d guess it hasn’t been touched in 15 years. The photos shown are of it exactly as it arrived. We’re now undertaking servicing and cleaning. The piano has 88 keys and a solid heavier touch. These pianos are probably one of the highest quality post war German pianos we see. They are scarce and readily bought when we’re offered one – an absolute favourite of ours. Offering maximum quality and craftsmanship, they’re a wonderful example of why good German pianos are so highly considered. This model has always been one of our favourite pianos. The classic look and styling details are of a type that remains ever popular and the original gloss finish gives it a contemporary feel. Another mark of premier quality is that it is fitted with a Renner Action. The condition is almost unbelievably good and totally original; it really is something special: a true German piano quality of the highest order.
