Serial number 6104/534, this tall German-manufactured piano has a nice period detail (revealed by the carving) and a walnut finish.
Reisbach
Reisbach Grand and stool. Serial number 2777. We have not seen a Reisbach piano before this one… It is of surprisingly high quality and has an amazing clarity of tone, having the ability to be very loud but also retaining the German tone quality. The piano does not sound like a small grand! Having been re-polished in the past (before we purchsed it), this grand has a very clean, lighter mahogany look.
This is one of those instances where this piano would be underestimated as the brand is not a familiar one, but the overall quality is higher than most and is underpriced when compared to pianos that would offer the same value.
The piano has 88 keys – in original ivory and the touch on the lighter side of what one expects from a grand piano, very pleasant to play – and 2 pedals. This is what one considers a baby grand, being 143 cm long and 144 cm wide. Previously referenced DE 957, this piano was sold during June 2022.
Rekewitz
DE 283 RekewitzUpright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number 10340, this piano has a Walnut finish.
Rich, C. Ritter, Halle: The piano manufacturing workshop was established by Carl Friedrich Ritter in Merseburg in March 1828. His son, Carl Richard Ritter, after working at other piano factories, took over his father’s factory when he died in 1863. Carl and his wife, Agnes, developed the company to the degree of needing to move it to a larger premises in Ritterstrasse in Merseburg and again with further space and staff required, the company was moved to Halle an der Saale in 1882. With C.R. Ritter’s two sons, Alfred and Willi Ritter, his daughter Helene, and son-in-law, H. Otto Naumann, having become involved in the firm, the company re-opened at the C. Rich. Knights Hall in Konigsstrasse 6 in Halle in 1889. The C. Rich. Ritter Pianofortefabrik products started getting recognition in Germany as well as other European countries, but it was limited by the labour demands of the First World War and met its downfall by the Second World War.
JAE 11 Rich, C. Ritter, Halle Upright and stool. Serial number: 5383. This piano was manufactured by the Ritter family in Halle, Germany between the years of 1900 and 1905, likely in 1904. Although the name of the piano carries Carl Richard Ritter’s name, it would have been manufactured by his two sons and son-in-law who had taken over the running of the factory in 1902.
The pianos fits the Art-Noveau, antique-style, in structure, with a mixed walnut casing: both burr and straight grained walnut.
This is an example of a small piano manufacturer whose name is not generally well known today, however, the family-run company started to make their mark in Europe in the early 1900’s, receiving high awards for their pianos until the company was limited due to WW1 and then WW2. One can view some their awards stated on the piano frame in the photograph to the left. Although there are not many of these pianos about, their quality compares and exceeds most. This is why one cannot be brand conscious when looking for pianos.
The piano has typical big German piano tone and power, which has quite an unusual liveliness to it, without the very mellow tone sometimes regarded as stifled.
The piano has 85 keys, with a lighter touch weight, and 2 pedals. Its ivory-clad naturals are intact. Its dimensions are: a height of 130 cm, a width of 151.5 cm and a depth of 68 cm.
