Why hire a piano?

Hiring a piano is a great option if you are indecisive about which piano to buy, it is also a way to inexpensively see if a hobby is going to be long-term.

As one continues to play, they are likely to develop a preference for the tone, touch and general feel of a piano. Each one is unique, even if it is made from the same manufacturer and is the same model.

It is a great way of testing a piano before purchasing it.

Which piano should you hire?

There are many things to consider when hiring a piano. It is a personal and individual choice that needs to match the purpose of having the piano and who will be using it.

We suggest starting with choosing a few based on aesthetics (which one you prefer the look of and will suit your home) and then contacting us to discuss which one would be the best hire piano for your preferences, motivation and budget.

If you are looking for a different finish, take a look at our Pianos Under Restoration page to view and interesting range of pianos which need to be re-polished, painted or restored.

Why Hire A Piano From Eshelby Pianos?

With our diverse variety of pianos displayed on our website pages with photographs, descriptions and pricing and with the option to view in our showrooms, we provide honest transparency and autonomous choice.

~ We offer a high quality stock of pianos, around 150 pianos currently available for rental, most of which are also sale stock. All of our pianos are repolished or painted when necessary.

~ The launch charge includes the transport of the piano as well as the first 30 days rental. There are no hidden costs like having to pay for your hire piano to be collected when you no longer require it – as this is included in the launch charge.

~ The tuning of the piano is included in the hire charges. The terms and conditions detailed in the hire agreement apply. Tuning is really expensive.

~ All pianos supplied are of an under-damper design (unless specified otherwise); come with stools and are tuned to concert pitch.

~We currently have a variety of over 450 pianos hired out to areas in and around the Gauteng area – Johannesburg and Pretoria, including Krugersdorp.

~ Eshelby Pianos is a family-run business: we service, restore and re-polish our pianos ourselves, as such – and with such a significant stock of pianos – are confident about the quality of our stock.

How does Eshelby Pianos hire out pianos?

~Choose the piano you would like to hire, and we will email you the one page piano hire agreement.

~When we receive the required documents and the launch payment, we schedule for the delivery of the piano.

~The upfront launch fee with covers the transport of the piano and stool to and from your residence as well as the first thirty days rental of the piano.

~The piano will arrive tuned and the tuning of the piano is included in the hire charges when it is necessary (i.e. no additional cost). The terms and conditions detailed in the hire agreement apply.

~The minimal hire period is six full calendar months (excluding the 30 days covered by the launch charge).

~It is an ongoing contract and notice of one full calendar month is required to cancel the hire agreement. Notice cannot be given for the hire month of December.

Can you buy your hire piano?

Most of our hire pianos are available for sale.

Some are not for sale for various reasons. One reason would be because we are obsessed with pianos and are rather attached to a few special ones. Another may be because we are concerned about features of the piano being consistent in the long term, for example, some pianos are manufactured with innovative or unusual parts – like plastic parts.

Does Eshelby Pianos offer a rent-to-own option?

We can arrange for a payment plan should you wish to pay for the piano over a few months, but – as stated in our hire agreement – all monies received for the piano hire does not count in any way towards the purchase of the piano. It is a hire agreement, not a purchase one, and the piano needs to be hired out for many years before we can even start achieving a profit.

If you have hired the piano and would like to purchase it, we will offer the piano to you with a discount on the current sale price, this is at Deon’s discretion. He offers quite a substantial discount depending on the piano.

Intermediate Upright Pianos

currently available for
Hire and Sale

Our intermediate range of pianos suits beginner learners up to piano grade/level 6; even at that level it may not be necessary to hire a premier piano unless the player intends on hosting a concert in their lounge. Most piano teachers would teach from pianos in this range. This range includes pianos like Challen, Kemble, Knight, Otto Bach, Rippen, Zimmerman.

Premier Upright Pianos

currently available for
Hire and Sale

Although our intermediate range of pianos are of a high quality, our premier range is superior. At Eshelby Pianos you are able to view, compare, purchase or hire the best pianos available in the world, like Steinway & Sons, Bechstein, Blüthner, Bösendorfer, Grotrian-Steinweg, Yamaha, Kawai, many other internationally regarded brands as well as some really special, unique and rare pianos.

Grand Pianos

currently available for
Hire and Sale

The appearance of a grand piano is stately, monumental and impressive! It is so moreish, including needing enough space and having a fairly generous budget. Some uprights really have brilliant dynamic sound, but with the option of opening the piano matched with a considerably larger sound board, longer strings and overall size, a grand piano holds it own in terms of range, resonance, tonality and responsive touch.

Pianos Under Restoration

Pianos under restoration includes pianos in need of repair, refurbishment, reconditioning, rehabilitation and/or general maintenance.

Our storerooms are bursting with some of the most famous and renowned makes of pianos; a few of fascinating, didactic museum value, as well as intermediate makes that need to be re-painted or restored. Due to the high cost of quality restoration and fitting the rhythm of current demand, some pianos lie in wait yearning and hankering for heed, waiting for adequate and requisite time, being kept because they are in demand; are of excellent quality and/or rarity.

Isn’t it great when you have an idea of exactly which finish you want on a piano and you can see those in need of a repolish?

Functional Piano Hire

Eshelby Pianos offer’s a substantial variety of distinguished grand and upright pianos for hire (view the pianos currently available) for short term hire: daily hire for special events – such as weddings, conferences, music videos – as well as for temporary hire – like music examinations, concerts, when your piano is being repaired or when a pianist is visiting.

Buying a piano

When you want to purchase a piano and look at at pianos for sale, it is always better to have an idea of what you are looking for as well as physically view and try out the piano in relation to others.

There are literally hundreds, possibly thousands, of makes out there, many of which are of the very best quality, but not necessarily well-known.

There are so many aspects to consider when purchasing a piano. We have detailed many considerations…
