This is a section of the Eshelby Pianos’ Piano Gallery which is intended to serve as a reference to provide insight about the huge variety and brands of pianos on the market, hopefully creating a useful resource for anyone interested in learning more about pianos. As time allows, we will be adding more details about piano manufacturers and interesting pianos that we have worked with.
These are pianos Eshelby Pianos owns or has owned since 2015. Most of these pianos are not currently available for hire or sale as they are hired out, have been sold, are awaiting restoration or are being kept as museum or personal items.

With having to recreate the Eshelby Pianos website in early 2023, it is going to take months to load all of the pianos to our gallery pages.

Otto Bach: See Dietman and Zimmerman for manufacture details. Otto Bach piano are possibly the most popular intermediate pianos in South Africa; the brand is certainly the most well known in South Africa. There are a wide range of Otto Bach pianos assembled in South Africa and some that were manufactured in the Zimmerman Factory in Germany.

JAE 14 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. This piano was assembled in South Africa. It is a nice example of this well-known piano make with a walnut finish and a compact, modern design. The piano has 88 keys and two pedals. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 109 cm, width of 143 cm and a depth of 56 cm.

JAE 25 Otto Bach Upright Piano with matching stool. This is a beautiful example of the make with its good form, dainty curved, Queen Anne legs and true mahogany casing.

JAE 29 Otto Bach Upright Piano with matching stool. This is a lovely, tall piano with a rosewood casing manufactured in the Zimmerman factory in Germany, and rebranded Otto Bach, in the 1930’s. It is a typically good pre-war German piano. Tall pianos have a distinguished aura and produce a far better tone. 

JAE 32 Otto Back Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number: 6659260. This piano has a rather dark brown mahogany casing and is of modern proportions. Eshelby Pianos re-polished this piano (July 2012). Such pianos are ever popular, and carry a very good reputation. This would suit someone who plays seriously, as the mechanism is responsive, the touch even and of medium-hardness. Many South Africans have been brought up on these pianos, and many teachers have performed lessons on them, indicating a good reliability. The piano has 88 keys and 2 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 110 cm; a width of 143.5 cm and a depth of 56.5 cm.

JAE 37 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number: 62529. This piano has modern proportions and interesting details – like the unusual leg and the smart frame in the top front panel. Otto Bach is possibly one of the most well-known brand of pianos in South Africa; it is the easy choice.

 JAE 42 Otto Bach Upright Piano with matching stool. This is a very clean example of this well-recognised South African made piano. Manufactured in the 1980’s it is a late model with an unusually light Sapele Mahogany casing. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 112.5 cm, width of 142.5 cm and a depth of 55.5 cm.

JAE 45 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with matching stool.

This piano was assembled in South Africa. 

This is a nice example of this well-known piano make.

It has a mahogany casing with an appealing, subtle, patina variation and a compact, modern design.

JAE 49 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with stool. This is one of those tall Otto Bach pianos manufactured in the Zimmerman Factory in Leipzig (Germany), this piano is walnut-cased with a veneered oval in the top panel. These pianos have a very good reputation and are known for being of good quality and have great reliability. The tone is a typical German, strong but never “tinny” sound. We will be adding photos soon.


JAE 57 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. This piano was manufactured in South Africa and has a mahogany casing. These really are a South African classic and have gained a very favourable reputation over many years.

JAE 70 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number: 24904; 7212; 68754; 144606. Manufactured in South Africa, Otto Bach refers to this model as a classic model, but it has what would be described as a modern style. It has a lighter mahogany case; the polish has a very slight cracklier effect. As one can see in the photos, the top can be lifted for a greater sound quality. The piano has a medium to bright tone; 88 keys, with a medium touch, and 2 pedals. The dimensions are: a height of 109 cm; a width of 143.5 cm and a depth of 57.5 cm.

JAE 77 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number 19750/66375. This is a classic-style model, and was built in South Africa. This piano was re-polished in January 2017 to a mahogany finish. The polish has lovely tone variation. Otto Bach pianos are a staple of the local market, and are well thought of, with a long history of service.

JAE 95 Otto BachUpright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 9418320. This piano has a mahogany casing and was manufactured in South Africa in the 1980’s. This piano is unique as it has an American-style action and American hammers. These are a higher quality than most and are in almost-new condition. It has an unusually rich, medium to bright tone with a lovely bass. The piano has 88 keys, with a medium to heavier touch, and 2 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 113 cm, a width of 142.5 cm and a depth of 55.5 cm.

JAE 95 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number 93689. This piano has a re-polished mahogany casing (January 2019); 88 keys, with a medium to firm touch, and 2 pedals. This piano’s dimensions are: height of 110 cm, width of 143.5 cm and depth of 56 cm.

JAE 102 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number: 165235; 0770. Manufactured in South Africa, Otto Bach refers to this model as a classic model, but it has what would be described as a modern style. The piano has 88 keys. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 109 cm, width of 143 cm and a depth of 56 cm.

 JAE 103 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 14124. This piano was manufactured in the Zimmerman Factory, in Germany, in the 1930’s and because of this and its height it produces a better sound than the Otto Bach pianos manufactured in South Africa; in fact, it bears no resemblance to a modern South African made Otto Bach. It is really a Zimmerman piano with a higher quality that has been re-labelled Otto Bach. However, whether produced in South Africa or Germany, Otto Bach piano are possibly the most popular intermediate pianos in South Africa. The piano has a mahogany casing with an oval panel with quarter veneering in the top panel. This beautiful piano has a full and rich tone. It has 88 keys and 2 pedals. This piano’s dimensions are: height of 132 cm, width of 151.5 cm and depth of 65.5 cm.

JAE 105 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number: 71544. This is an extremely nice piano in clean original condition. The walnut casing is unusual with minimalist detail. The piano’s pleasant “sunny” tone, not tinny nor demure. It has 88 keys – with a medium to firm touch – and three pedals. The dimensions of this piano are a height 109; cm a width of 144.5 cm and a depth of 56 cm.

JAE 111 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number: 178871.

Manufactured in South Africa, Otto Bach refers to this model as a classic model, but it has what would be described as a modern style.

The piano has a bright tone, 88 keys – with a medium to lighter touch – and 2 pedals. This piano’s dimensions are: height of 109 cm, width of 143 cm and depth of 56 cm.

JAE 116 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number 70259. This piano was manufactured in South Africa and it is in a walnut casing of an incredibly unusual colour: it has a rather attractive, very light shade of an almost bleached yellow.
We believe this could be the cleanest condition Otto Bach we have ever bought,  it is literally comparable to new and certainly is an unusual,  sought after piano.
This is a true example of why one cannot rely on the brand of a piano,  it was built in the Dietmann factory, has Rud. Ibach visibly cast into the steel frame and is branded Otto Bach!
The tone is lively,  having a brightness, but no tinny vibrations. The piano has 88 keys – with a medium touch weight – and 3 pedals (the middle one being a sostenuto,  practice pedal). The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 112 cm, a width of 143.5 cm and a depth of 55.5 cm.

DE 210 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number: 6455778. This older model Otto Bach made in South Africa is an excellent piano, better than many of its counterparts and imported pianos of the time. The piano has a mahogany casing done in a patinated finish; it is very attractive. The piano has a warm, rich and powerful tone; 88 keys, with a medium weight touch, and 2 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 112 cm, a width of 143.5 cm and a depth of 61 cm.

DE 214 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with matching stool.

Serial number 635502.

This piano has a flame-mahogany casing.

It has a slightly more unusual case because the legs sit below the keyboard.

DE 227 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 10360. This piano has a flame or fiddle-back mahogany casing. Otto Bach pianos have a good reputation and are very popular in the South African market.

DE 229 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with stool. Built in South Africa, this piano is a nice, less usual model with Queen Anne legs, in a mahogany-finish casing, with matching stool. Made “c” 1980s. Extremely clean internally and externally.

DE 242 Otto BachUpright Pianoforte with stool.

This is a beautiful example of an Otto Bach with its good form and dainty curved, Queen Anne legs.

It is more modern in that it is simple, but it certainly is simply lovely.

DE 243 Otto BachUpright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 6456321. Otto Bach is likely the most well-known piano make in South Africa. This piano has a mahogany casing. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of  110 cm, width of 143 cm and a depth of 55.5 cm.

DE 261 Otto Bach (Re-branded: Hausmann) Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 20300. This is a lovely example of the Otto Bach make. Although it has the typical Classic Otto Bach structure, the frames in the top and bottom panel together with the lighter casing, a walnut finish, make it far more refined.

DE 280 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with Matching Stool. Serial number: 6355421. This piano has a mahogany casing and was manufactured in South Africa in the 1970’s. Otto Bach refers to this model as a classic model, but it has what would be described as a modern style. The piano has a crisp, lively tone. It has 88 keys, with a medium touch weight, and 2 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 109 cm, a width of 142.5 cm and a depth of 55.5 cm.

DE 290 Otto Bach Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 65882. This is a late model Otto Bach. It was purchased in a exceptionally clean condition; it looks just about new. The casing is mahogany, but not of the Sapele type mahogany usually found on these pianos. It has a lovely graining more akin to a walnut veneer. The case design is especially pleasing and neat. This piano is a beautiful example of this ever-popular make. It has 88 keys, with a medium to heavier touch weight, and 2 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 108 cm, width of 143 cm and a depth of 55.5 cm.

DE 293 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial numbers: 16926 and 146931. Manufactured in the Zimmerman Factory in Leipzig (Germany), this piano is walnut-cased with the quarter veneered oval in the top panel. These pianos have a very good reputation and are known for being of good quality and have great reliability. The tone is a typical German, strong but never “tinny” sound. The dimensions of this piano are: height of 130 cm, width of 153 cm and depth of 66.5 cm.

DE 293 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number 156156. Manufactured in the Zimmerman Factory in Leipzig (Germany) in the 1920’s, this piano is mahogany-cased with the quarter veneered oval in the top panel. These pianos have a very good reputation and are known for being of good quality and have great reliability. It has new dampers, hammers and key tops, so has had an expensive renovation. The dimensions of this piano are: height of 130 cm, width of 153 cm and depth of 66.5 cm.

DE 308 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with matching stool.

Serial number: 157576. Manufactured in the Zimmerman Factory in Leipzig (Germany), this piano is walnut-cased with the quarter veneered oval in the top panel.

These pianos have a very good reputation and are known for being of good quality and have great reliability.

DE 328 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with stool. Finished in a satin sheen mahogany casing, this Otto Bach was assembled in South Africa and is a very late model Otto Bach in comparable to new condition. It’s unusual for us to find a piano in such good condition which required practically no work apart from a good service and tunings. The piano has a superior quality Renner Action and keys – which is a mark of quality. The keys have a heavier touch, often preferred by more serious piano players, who want to build their technique. The piano has 88 keys and 3 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 112 cm, width of 142.5 cm and a depth of 55.5 cm.

DE 338 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 68638. Wow! This is a beautiful example of the Otto Bach make with its good form; dainty, curved, Queen Anne legs and the finishing touch of the wispy attractive frame on the top and bottom panel. The walnut casing is varied and subtly contrasts with the delicate frames. It was manufactured in the late 80’s in South Africa. The piano has a strong, lively brighter tone, 88 keys – with a medium touch weight – and 3 pedals. The dimensions are a height of 109 cm, a width of 145 cm and a depth of 56 cm.

DE 343 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 6658638. This piano has a black casing.

DE 349 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial numbers: 29116; 58302. Otto Bach pianos are very popular in South Africa and carry a very good reputation; this one was actually manuactured in South Africa. It is a Classic style, later model with a good quality action and build.  This Otto Bach has been re-polished with Rubio Monocote Pure over its walnut casing. This has created a very attractive, more natural, low-gloss look, with an almost inperceptible grey tinge in some of the grain of the walnut timber. This is a beautiful, han-polished finish. Generally, Otto Bach pianos have a medium tone, neigher bright nor mellow. This Otto Bach has a bright, but surprisingly rich, tone – lively without the harshness. The piano has 88 keys – with a medium touch weight – and 2 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 114 cm; a width of 143 cm and a depth of 55.5 cm.

DE 354 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 6760798. This is a Classic model Otto Bach Classic manufactured in South Africa in the 1970s.This has a very dark mahogany casing known as Mink. It can almost appear as black in certain lighting. It retains it’s original finish.
Otto Bach pianos are an ever-popular make which suits a great range of pianists from beginner through to experienced.  Many South Africans – and many now teachers – grew up on these very successfully-produced pianos. This piano has a medium to brighter tone. The piano has 88 keys, with a medium touch, and 2 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 109 cm, a width of 143.5 cm and a depth of 56.5 cm.

DE 382 Otto Bach Serial number: 73322. Manufactured in South Africa. This is a eally lovely looking Otto Bach with a rather different, very busy, amazing grain timber case in a mahogany colour. Serial number: 6760246. This piano has a finish called mink, which is almost black – something much desired by the modern consumer!

JAE 410 Otto Bach Upright Piano with matching stool. Serial numbers: 17445; 10236/85. Otto Bach pianos have earned a reputation to be a reliable, standard piano in South Africa, this one actually manufactured in South Africa in the 1970’s. The piano’s casing was painted with the Barcelona Orange Chalk Paint (April 2017) and then with Granny B’s General Lee shade of orange, somewhat less bright and more appealing (April 2022). Although the topcoats could be distressed to reveal the Paris Grey undercoat, we have found these unusual colours for piano casing to be very popular as one, plain, bold colour.  JAE 420 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with matching stool.This is a classic, South African manufactured Otto Bach. The piano has been hand-painted a graphite, almost black, dark grey (October 2016) that suits its simple structure and which gives it a more modern appearance. The piano has 88 keys. JAE 430 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number: 6456360. This Classic Model, South African Manufactured Otto Bach was re-finished in Granny B’s chalk paint (January 2022). This gives a charcoal-blackboard type finish which is understated and very appealing. Its internals are in very good and original condition. The tone is powerful and cheerful. JAE 431 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number 6052191. This earlier South African model Otto Bach is a really nice example of the make and they are a superior quality build when compared to later chipboard-cased models. The traditional style has a timeless, clean appeal. The piano and stool has a satin white finish (August 2017). This piano’s dimensions are: height of 111 cm, width of 144 cm and depth of 56 cm.

JAE 435 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number 662591. This piano was manufactured in South Africa and has a Renner Action. Its casing has been painted the Gris Belge shade of Rubio Monocoat (February 2018). It has a light coating of the Monocoat so that the wood grain can be seen through it. We have found this product very popular as it gives the casing great variation of colour. The piano has a rich, but brighter tone, 88 keys – with a medium to heavy touch – and 2 pedals. JAE 438 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number 75058; 52046. This piano was assembled in South Africa. The piano has been re-polished to a Satin Black finish, often preferred over a high gloss black, in January 2019. The piano is exceptionally clean in condition both inside and out. As always, Otto Bach pianos have a great following and are ever-popular. They were not built in a black option, so this is unusual. The piano has 88 keys, with a good medium touch, and 2 pedals. It is such a pretty thing with its Queen Anne legs matching its re-polished satin black finish (April 2022). It has a lively and crisp tone, 88 keys – with a medium to lighter touch – and 2 pedals. JAE 455 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number: 6052349; 25529; 5529; 1329; 52349. It has 88 keys and 2 pedals. This Otto Bach was manufactured in South Africa in the 1960’s. These earlier model Otto Bachs were a really well-built product with high quality components and casing. This one has the very classic Queen Anne legs and a modern re-polished (April 2022) satin black finish . These pianos compare very favourably with any imported competitors of the era and their reputation has grown considerably over the years. The tone is crisp, but not tinny. It has 88 keys – with a medium to lighter touch – and 2 pedals.

DE 501 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 27363. This piano has been painted with Annie Sloane Chalk paint: an undercoat of Graphite and top coat of Aubasson Blue (February 2018).  This gives one the option of having a flat colour or having the piano distressed to a French Provincial finish. Both are very popular.  Aubasson Blue is a remarkable colour of chalk paint and reflects different shades of blue and even green with light variation. Otto Bach is a well known and popular make of piano in South Africa. This piano is ery attractive and clean. It has 88 keys – with a lighter touch – and 2 pedals. DE 502 Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 6557288. This is a classic Otto Bach, proudly manufactured in South Africa in around the 1970’s. The casing has been stained black and finished in Rubio Monocoat’s clear finish, giving it a no-finish, matt look with a matching stool (November 2017). The colour is almost black, but varied: this is a unique case finish that shows like natural grain variation rather than a flat or brushstroke surface appearance. This is an Otto Bach that was manufactured in South Africa – it is proudly South African!

Otto Bach Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. This piano is a good piano of a compact design has a modern style that is accentuated with its re-invented casing finish of antiqued white paint over a blue base, a currently popular finish. It has a very light rosewood casing, refined with a darker top panel and on the top of the key fall.

The piano has a lovely structure: moulded sides and Queen Anne legs and darker shaped top and panels.

JAE 601 Carol Otto Upright Pianoforte with matching stool.

This piano was manufactured in Germany in the 1930’s.

It is approximately 1.3m tall and has a walnut casing.

The piano is a fine instrument, with almost all of its parts original, ivory keys – great value for price.

HJG 122 Carol Ottoupright piano with matching stool. Serial number: 21302. This is a refined old-fashioned looking German piano with burr walnut casing. It has turned legs, carved pilasters and original brass handles on its sides. Its dimensions are: height of 1.25 m, width of 1.48 m and depth of 63 cm.

Petrof

 JAE 402 Petrof Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. This piano was built in the 1960’s. The Petrof manufacturer has a very good reputation: known to build high quality, expensive pianos. This piano’s casing was one of Eshelby Piano’s first attempts at a French Country Style finish (2014). The top coat is an unusual cream colour, the distressing reveals subtle lines of the grey undercoat and the original brown casing. The finish suits the delicate frames on the top and bottom panel as well as its lovely Queen Anne legs.

DE 697 Petrof Upright Pianoforte and stool. Serial number 75799. It was built in then Czechoslovakia in 1965. Petrof is an extremely old and we’ll established piano maker of great repute. We see very few in South Africa and they are always sought after. This one is something rather special, especially when looking at the linear veneering in its mahogany casing. It has 88 keys; a medium, firmer touch; two pedals and a wonderfully rounded tone with a depth seldom heard on non-European made instruments.

Phelps. Pianos: Manufactured in London, England.

JAE 75 Phelps Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number: 10451. This is an English piano of very pleasing proportions, in a mahogany casing, which, unusually, has been hand-wax-finished. This is a very traditional method of polishing, seldom used as it takes a great deal of effort to build-up a lasting sealed-shine, but when done like this, is really beautiful. It has a subtle lustre and very natural appearance. The piano has a gentle, subdued brighter tone with a good range; 85 keys – with a medium to lighter touch – and 2 pedals. This piano’s dimensions are: height of 107 cm, width of 135 cm and depth of 57 cm.

Philadelphia and Lester

JAE 41 Philadelphia and Lester Upright Pianoforte with matching stool.

This piano has a mahogany casing. It has a lovely console-design, the height being in-between a spinet and larger piano. American made, such pianos have an excellent reputation, with a full and lively tone. The design of the case is very attractive, and its size is pleasing in many homes. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 95 cm, width of 144 cm and a depth of 63 cm.

JAE 85 Philedalphia and Lester Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number: 175427.Manufactured in the U.S.A., this is a very elegant pianoforte with a fretted music desk; turned, fluted legs and a mahogany casing. We are finding this style of piano extremely popular. It has a brighter tone and a medium weight touch. Please note that the 3rd pedal only operates the dampers. This piano’s dimensions are: height of 93 cm, width of 143.5 cm and depth of 63.5 cm.
