Eavestaff, W.G. & Sons: Factory was established in 1823, in London, England. The factory also makes Brasted and Minipiano and autoplayer Eavestaff.

JAE 13 Eavestaff Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. This piano has a figured walnut casing with a matching stool. This is a very interesting piano because when it is closed it resembles a desk and it is rather small piano, referred to as an ‘Eavestaff Pianette Minipiano’, which would be very suitable when one does not have very much space to accommodate a piano. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 98 cm, a width of 145 cm and a depth of 49 cm.

JAE 38 Eavestaff Upright Piano with matching stool.
Serial number: 158131. This piano was manufactured in London in the 1950’s. It has a figured-walnut casing. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 110 cm, width of 137.5 cm and a depth of 51 cm.

JAE 44 Eavestaff Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number 150657. This piano is a Mini Royal, which means that its bass strings are structured to be much longer and therefore carry the sound of a larger upright piano. It is in beautiful, original condition, is very compact and has a figured walnut casing. It has 85 keys. This piano’s dimensions are height of 99 cm, width of 147 cm and depth of 49 cm.

JAE 55 Eavestaff Upright Pianoforte with stool. This Eavestaff is a ‘Mini Royal’ model, which is very collectable. Although it is a miniature piano, it has a very clever design because it has longer bass strings in comparison to other small pianos. The bass strings are actually comparable in length to a tall upright piano. Because of the design, you are getting the tone of a larger piano in a very compact piano. Also, this particular piano has a very interesting appearance – looking like a sideboard when closed. This piano’s dimensions are: height of 100 cm, width of 145 cm and depth of 48 cm.

JAE 93 Eavestaff Upright Piano with matching stool. This piano’s amazingly clever design, being a Mini Royal, gives it the same tone as a much larger piano – the strings are the same length if not longer than much larger pianos. The piano has a figured walnut casing. Being a smaller piano and a Mini Royal, it would be a great option for a more advanced player with limited space. This piano has 85 keys, with a medium to heavier touch weight, and 2 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are a height of 97 cm, width of 145.5 cm and a depth of 49.5 cm.

JAE 122 Eavestaff Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 176433. Built in London, this piano is referred to as an Eavestaff Pianette or Minipiano. The term “Mini” must not be confused with it being a short keyboard or such – it is a full standard set of keys -it has really compact design in the dimensions of its general structure. It has a very unusual design, more modern in style than the usual ‘Mini’.  Furthermore, it has a surprisingly powerful tone for its size: bright and lively but not tinny. The piano has a mahogany casing. The piano has 85 keys, with a lighter touch, and 2 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are a height of 98 cm, width of 140 cm and a depth of 52.5 cm.

DE 225 Eavestaff Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. This is a rather compact piano. It is a Mini Royal, which means that its bass strings are structured to be much longer and therfore carry the sound of a larger upright piano – it is a build that is sought after and quite collectible. It has a nicely re-polished mahogany casing. The piano has a medium to lighter touch, 85 keys and 2 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are a height of 98 cm, width of 144 cm and a depth of 48.5 cm.

DE 363 EavestaffUpright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 160073. This piano was manufactured in 1954, in London, England and has a mahogany casing. It has a firm touch, 85 keys and two pedals. The dimensions of this piano are a height of 108 cm, width of 138 cm and a depth of 51 cm.

JAE 432 EavestaffUpright Pianoforte with stool. We need to re-polish this piano and will do so as time allows.

JAE 440 EavestaffUpright Pianoforte with stool. This is a mini Eavestaff. It needs to be painted or re-polished and we will do so as time allows.

HJG 85 Eavestaff Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Manufactured in England, this Mini Royal piano has a mahogany casing. Because it is such a low piano, one can see over the top of it when playing the piano. A ‘Mini Royal’ piano is different because it has much longer base strings in comparison to other small pianos. As a result, the piano has a decent tone in a very compact piano. It only stands approximately 1 m tall.

HJG 60 Eavestaff Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. The piano was made in England. It has a grained burr-walnut finish. The Eavestaff factory goes back to 1823; the instruments the factory produced are made suited for the tropics.  Its dimensions are: height of 1.12 m, width of 1.46 m and depth of 56 cm.

Eavestaff Grand Pianoforte with stool.

Serial number: 154 577.

This piano was manufactured in London in 1954 and has a mahogany casing. This piano is no longer available (March 2017).

Ecke, Carl: Factory was established in 1843, in Berlin, Germany.

DE 370 Ecke, CarlUpright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 18342. This piano was manufactured in Germany, between the years of 1905-1909, and has a walnut casing. As one can see in the photos, the casing has – unfortunately – been modernised and needs attention. The piano has 88 keys, with beautiful ivory tops and a light to medium touch, and 2 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 138 cm, width of 157.5 cm and a depth of 68.5 cm.

DE 702 Carl Ecke Upright piano with stool. This piano was manufactured in Berlin. These pianos are one of the best and well respected piano makes. The very tall case makes for a wonderfully rich and deep tone quality. Such a piano is extremely hard to beat, and while many South Africans do not recognise the maker’s name, all it takes to switch from the traditional view of wanting a japanese-type piano, is to play a piano like this.
One is reminded very quickly of why German pianos of this era have such an amazing reputation. In original condition, with ivory keys, and walnut casing. Serious players, look no further! The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 132 cm, width of 156 cm and a depth of 67.5 cm.

Carl Ecke Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 23481.This piano was manufactured in Germany between the years of 1915 to 1920, likely 1917, and has a burr walnut casing, finished in a waxed-look, which is a very attractive, low-sheen finish. It is of the highest quality: a no nonsense, top of the range, German piano. The tone of these pianos is unequalled by really any modern piano. It has a medium to heavier touch. This piano, previously referenced DE 722, was sold in March 2018.

Carl Ecke Upright Pianoforte with matching stool (was JAE 310, sold August 2015). This is a fantastic mid-1920’s piano, refinished in a high-gloss mahogany, highly acclaimed make. Carl Ecke is one of the best considered pianos in the piano trade. despite being built in the 1920’s, it appearance is deceptively modern.

DE 901 Carl Ecke Grand Pianoforte with stool. The piano was built in Germany in the 1930’s. The German pianos of this era were largely of top quality and this one does not disappoint. This piano was in obvious need of case restoration and a repolish (see the photos to the left), as well as internal restoration. It has now been repolished to a high gloss white finish (August 2022). This is a very unusual grand, known as a symmetrical grand, a design where both bass and treble sides are curved. We have only had one other grand built in this way, in stock, before. To have something different, but of such superior quality, is special. Carl Ecke is a highly prized maker of pianos and this is sure to be one of the pianos we will always remember.  It has obvious collectors’ appeal and would be a talking point in any setting.  The beauty is exceeded by the fact that this is a really good instrument beyond being a wonderful decorators’ piece. We are currently busy with the internal restoration as time allows. Its small dimensions of a width of 143.5 cm and a length of 148 cm make it especially saleable. The piano has 85 keys and a beautifully mellow – yet strong – tone. The silky touch of a medium to heavier weight make it quite alluring to play.

Ed. Seiler: See Seiler, ED.

Edward Fischer: Often the re-labelled name shown on Yamaha pianos. Look at our Yamaha Gallery for more information and examples.

Engelmann & Günthermann: Berlin, Germany, 1888.

DE 216 Engelmann & Günthermann Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 503/16395. This piano was manufactured in Berlin, Germany in the 1930’s. It is suitable for a more advanced player. The piano has a mahogany casing and is approximately 1.3 m tall.

Ennis & Co

DE 507 Ennis & Co. Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 53769. Built in the 1920’s, these American pianos have a wonderful reputation in the trade for great reliability and longevity. This is a full sized upright and has an excellent rich tone. The piano has been re-finished in the Gris Belge shade of Rubio Monocoat (November 2019), it has the very sought-after look of a washed timber. It has 88 keys, with a medium weight touch, and 3 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 132.5 cm; a width of 152.5 cm and a depth of 67 cm.

Estey

DE 737 Estey Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number 54775. This piano was manufactured in New York, this is an extremely proud looking piano of impressive proportions, and with an amazing, fiery, figured walnut casing. We’ve kept the casing looking correct by re-polishing the piano in a traditional, waxed finish, giving off a lovely lustre (November 2017). This piano has 88 keys. This piano’s dimensions are: height of 137 cm, width of 160.5 cm and depth of 66.5 cm.

Fahr, Albert: Factory was established in 1887, in Zeitz, Germany.

This is a rather tall piano, certainly with masculine overtones, but this is finished of with refined details like the extra details on its legs and the oval in the top panel.

It has a dark walnut casing.

Fehle, Ebingen

JAE 08 Fehle, Ebingen Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number: 2702. This is a Scandinavian pianoforte with a light wood case. It is a compact modern piano, which is not common in both the light shade as well as the make. In fact, it is the only one that we have had in our stock. It is of an extremely high quality build, as one would expect from this part of the world! This piano’s dimensions are: height of 108 cm, width of 141.5 cm and depth of 53.5 cm.

Fehn, A & Co.: Berlin, Germany, 1900.

JAE 417 Fehn & Co. Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. This piano has interestingly shaped legs and decorative frames making it bold and such a beautifully well suited, contrastingly detailed stool. Although the piano looks contemporary, it is actually an antique having been made in the 1930’s. The piano has been painted in the Provence green finish of chalk paint (February 2017). The structure and details of the piano really suits the chalk finish as the colour varies as light changes and ths is highlighted by extra structural details of the piano. Although the top coat can be distressed to reveal the grey-brown undercoat, it has not been distressed. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 130 cm, width of 148 cm and a depth of 63.5 cm.

Finger, Albert: Factory was established in 1887, in Eisenberg, Germany.

HRE 37 Albert Finger Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 20115.

R. Fischer

DE 729 R. Fischer Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number: 4538. Manufactured in Berlin, Germany, this piano has a tall masculine structure balanced with an abundance of extra details and finnished off with the interesting detail on the centre frame of the top panel. Flefchner

JAE 23 Flefchner Upright Piano with matching stool. Manufactured in the 1930’s, this piano is of a very aattractive design, unusually finished in a very light colour timber. It is German and of a very high quality. There is some etching-detailing on the panels. It has an especially rich, mellow tone. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 134 cm, width of 148 cm and a depth of 64 cm.

Förster, August: A small workshop was established in 1859, in Löbau, Germany by August Förster and was developed into a modern plant from 1862. In 1897, August Förster’s son, Cäsar took over the factory when his father died and in 1900 founded a branch factory in Georgswalde in Bohemia which enabled them to circumvent high import duties and gain access to a larger market. In 1945, the Czech government nationalized the branch factory in Bohemia and produced pianos with the name August Förster up to the year 2000, pianos with the name August Förster produced in the Czech Petroff factory are not the same design and quality of the original and traditional August Förster pianos made in Löbau. Gerhard and Manfred Förster, Cäser’s sons, took over after their father’s death in 1915. In 1969, Wolfgang Förster (Manfred’s son) inherited and managed the company, even though the company became state owned (in 1972) because of high inheritance taxes. In 1976 the family name was added back into the company name, re-naming it: VED Förster Pianos Löbau. After the collapse of the government of the German Democratic Republic, Wolfgang Foerster was able to re-privatize the family business. From 1966 till 2008 Wolfgang Förster directed the company before he passed on the heritage to his daughter Annekatrin Förster. Above, right is a photo of the logo of the BVK (Bundesverband Klavier e.V.-BVK) showing that the pianos are 100% “Made in Germany” – certified by the German piano Maker Association. Someone recently, October 2016, related to us their experience of visiting the factory in Germany; he was very impressed! See http://www.august-foerster.de for more information.

August Förster Upright Pianoforte and stool. Serial number: 140088. This piano was built in Löbau in 1971. It was purchased new in Pretoria by the ex-owner’s parents.
It has a high-gloss walnut casing that is in impeccable condition and has refined detail. An original condition piano showing minimal usage, this is probably one of the best upright pianos we’ve ever stocked. The August Förster manufacturer carries an extremely high reputation and is still building pianos that are considered amongst the world’s best. A significant price tag accompanies that good standing and wonderful quality. One must also remember that a case in this matched walnut look with so much detail would add a huge premium. This matches tone and quality of any high class, respected European-built piano and should certainly be considered an option if looking at the purchase of any new piano as it’s going to be better than most at a price which could make it a good future investment. Pianos like this are simply almost unobtainable.
The piano has a very rich, rounded tone; a medium touch; 88 keys and 2 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 117 cm, width of 153 cm and a depth of 60 cm. Previously referenced DE 731, we sold this piano in December 2018.

DE 906 August Förster Grand Pianoforte with stool. Model 150; Serial number 83 027. Built in the 1950s by a well-known and respected factory, this is a lovely piano of pedigree and quality. It is something out of the ordinary and would suit any serious player, and someone who wants a piano that is different from the standard fare – hard to find and collectible. The black casing was in its original guise, and did show wear, so it was re-polished in November 2017. The photos are of the piano before the re-polish, we will add new photos soon. The dimensions of this piano are 155 cm in length and 151 cm in width.

August Förster Grand Pianofote with stool.

This is a very attractive high-gloss white grand pianoforte with lovely, detailed, cabriole legs. It was manufactured in the late 1950’s in Löbau, Germany. One of the most well-known family-built pianos, August Förster still manufacturers pianos of the highest standard.

The piano has been well-maintained over the years. This piano was sold in July 2016.

Gooldini

Gooldini Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Although this piano is not English, it has a Victorian style to it. This piano has great refined detail, with its obvious antique-looking carvings as well as the inlays. The piano has ivory keys. It is not just a good piano, but such a beautiful piece as well. Standing approximately 1.3m tall, this is a true ‘upright-grand’ – a big piano with big tone! Its tone is rounded and mellow, with lots of depth. These are the pianos that have given pre-war German makes their amazing reputation. There is no need to say more!

JAE 47 Görs and Kallmann Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 10388. This piano was assembled in the mid 70’s in the proudly South African Dietman Factory. Dietman also made Otto Bach Pianos and one can notice the similarities between this piano and a classic-style Otto Bach structure. However, this piano takes that typical build to another level maintaining the clean appearance of modern simplicity and adding the brilliant, refined details of the frames in the top and bottom front panels. The piano has a walnut casing, subtly distinguished with variation in areas like the frames. Without being too intense, the tone is brighter. The piano has 88 keys, with a lighter touch, and 3 pedals. The dimensions are a height of 109 cm, a width of 143 cm and a depth of 56.5 cm.

JAE 123 Görs & Kallmann Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 63537. Assembled in South Africa in the Dietman Factory, one can see the similarities between this piano and the Classic Otto Bach also manufactured in the Dietman Factory. However, this structure offers far more with its smart refining frames in the top and bottom front panels whilst retaining a clean and modern appearance. The polish on the mahogany casing shows some crackleur but does not detract from the aesthetic appeal. In all original condition. The tone is pleasant with a warmer feel. It has 88 keys – with a medium touch weight – and 3 pedals.

JAE 433 Görs and Kallmann Upright Pianoforte with matching stool.  Serial number 120494. This piano was built in London in 1933 to the specifications of Görs and Kallmann Berlin. We have heard of the collaboration between this very famous German maker and London makers, but this is the first London made one we have seen. The casing is almost Arts and Crafts in styling and has the simple elegance of a timeless design. This piano has the refined detail of an older piano but with an appealing medium size and unusual legs. We have just completed the restoration of the casing of this piano with a modern satin black finish (October 2017). This really lovely piano has original ivory keys. It has a brighter tone, 85 keys – with a medium touch – and 2 pedals. This piano’s dimensions are: height of 117 cm, width of 147 cm and depth of 62 cm.

The piano has been polished to a high-gloss grey finish, which takes the modern design to a rather fashionable level. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 112 cm, a width of 140.5 cm and a depth of 55.5 cm.

DE 712 Gors and Kallmann Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number: 34 579. This piano was built around 1898 in Germany. It has a spectacular monastic-style, rosewood casing, inlays on the panels and even candle-holders. This is the only such styled example of this renowned make we have had, it’s certainly a very rare collector’s piece. The condition is phenomenal considering it’s great age, and is original in terms of polish, ivories and so on. It is truly special. One would expect this piano to have had an over-damper action, however it is very fortunately fitted with a still-used under-damper action. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 128.5 cm, width of 148 cm and a depth of 66 cm.

Görs and Kallmann Upright Piano with matching stool. This piano has a walnut casing and is one of the iconic, German pianos, of a very tall design. This is a piano for someone who really appreciates the complexity and fullness of tone that only such a piano can produce. This is why the old German pianos have such a good reputation. The modern or new piano taste seems to be largely a very bright, even tinny tone, when one plays a piano like this, the experience is usually one of great surprise, and makes one remember that tone is not volume, but a range and richness that can be produced by the pianist. Previously referenced JAE 38, this piano was sold.

HJG 47 Görs & Kallmann Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number: 595/66574. This is a good quality example of the make. It has a light rose-wood casing. HJG 97 Görs & Kallmann Upright Pianoforte with matching stool. Serial number: 80382. Some examples of the make are very masculine and boxy, being both tall and wide. This is certainly not the case with this Gors and Kallmann. This piano has a lovely lighter casing and attractive, loose, Queen Anne legs. It is a gentle, feminine beautiful piano.

Görs & Spangenberg, R: Pianoforte factory Görs & Spangenberg. There is very little information available about this piano factory. It has been listed as being established in 1916 and 1918. One can see the obvious association with Robert Gors and Gors and Kallmann. The factory was based in Berlin, Germany, and Robert took over the management of the factory in 1920 and stayed there for the untill 1927 (http://www.luise-berlin.de/lexikon/frkr/g/goers_robert.htm). The piano that we have in our hire stock has a remarkable tone and we are very impressed with the quality of it.

DE 342 R. Gors and Spangenberg Upright Pianoforte with stool. Serial number 2146. This walnut-cased piano is a typically good quality German piano dating from around 1922. It has a sublime tone and depth of tone: unbelievable bass and consistently good tone throughout. Pianos like this are just beautiful. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 132 cm, width of 156 cm and a depth of 64.5 cm.

Grotrian: Braunschweig. Pianos were manufactured from 1864. Grotrian Steinweg has an interesting history of being associated with Steinway and Sons but they are not the same company and their name was changed to only be Grotian, with ‘Steinweg’ removed from the name so as not to be associated with the name ‘Steinways’. The pianos are of a very high quality.

DE 757 Grotrian Steinweg Upright Pianoforte and stool. Serial number 93934. This is a very late model example in this country. Although it was built in Braunsweig, Germany in 1965, this piano has a pre-war quality with a modern aesthetic. Grotrian Steinweg pianos have always been regarded as one of the very best and historic German pianos. It has been an amazing find. The piano is a very impressive instrument befitting it’s lineage – massively costly now and back when new too. This Grotrian is suited for a serious pianist or anyone who appreciates this sort of quality. As one can see in the top left photographs, the casing needed attention, so we re-polished it to a high gloss black finish (May 2020). This piano has 88 keys, with a heavier touch, and 2 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are: a height of 120 cm, width of 142 cm and a depth of 61.5 cm.

DE 771 Grotrian Steinweg Upright Pianoforte and stool. Serial number: 77714. This Model 120 Grotrian Steinweg piano was manufactured in 1957, in Braunscweig, Germany, in one of the most famous and historic factories in the world. We were very excited to find this piano. They are extremely rare in South Africa, especially of this vintage. The piano is fitted with a walnut casing, with lovely classic details – such as the mouldings on the top panel and Queen Anne legs. This must always have been a very expensive piano.
Restoration will include re-polishing of the casework to a high gloss black finish (February 2020). The ivory keys will be lightly bleached and cleaned up and the action will get a major service. The piano shows very little wear, so no parts should need replacement, but only service.
Grotrian is widely regarded as one of the short-list of the best pianos in the world. They include some unique and unusual build features such as an x- shaped back-bracing to aid stability. The opportunity to purchase something like this over a cheaper new piano seems an obvious choice. This is the sort of instrument one buys to pass on in the family for decades to come.
This piano has 85 keys with the naturals in ivory, with a medium to heavier touch weight, and 2 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are a height of 120 cm, a width of 144 cm and a depth of 61.5 cm.

Grotrian Steinweg Upright Pianoforte and stool.

Serial number: 44704.

Grotrian is one of the most highly regarded piano manufacturers, as still a family run business, to this day.

This is a tall piano at approximately 125 cm high. Previously referenced DE 773, this piano was sold in July 2020.

DE 934 Grötrian Steinweg Grand Pianoforte and stool. Serial number 62470. This piano was built in Braunsweig, Germany in 1932. It is a Model 140, meaning a length of 140 cm. We rarely see these types of pianos and have been fortunate to obtain this one. This is a gem of a true “baby” grand piano – this is consequently one of the smallest grand pianos available, highly sought after as small grands of high quality are very rare. The major advantage of a grand piano for serious pianists is the touch, general feel and response of the action. The problem with small grands is that they lack tone, but the really high-quality ones can be an exception.  The advantage of the quality make really speaks for itself, this piano having a wonderful clear tone usually lacking in miniature grands. This piano thus supports both good tone as well as a wonderful touch in such a compact grand. Grotrian Steinweg is one of the most revered piano builders in the world and are still producing small numbers of hand-built instruments. This piano is a true example of the manufacturer’s art and reputation. This one was re-polished in high gloss black (2018). It has new hammers, but retains its original ivory keys and all internals – such as the sound board structure, strings and so on. This is something special! The piano is 149 cm in width.

Grotrian Steinweg Grand Pianoforte with stool.

This is one of the most historic and interesting factories in the world.

Analysis of their history will show the family links to the Steinwegs (later Steinways).

We get very little opportunities to purchse pianos of this calibre. Being 185 cm in length, this is also a less usual, larger grand.

Some pianos just “sing”, the moment one touches the keys, one knows this is something special.

Combined with it’s life-history, ownership details and so on, the family booklet even contains the origional train ticket and brochure from Grotrian-Steinweg’s London sales rooms, in 1938, when the family visited there to choose this piano. Even the lock-key remains with the piano.

The piano will undergo a restoration, to include new hammerheads, stripping and re-finishing of the soundboard and frame, re-polishing of the casing and so on.

The unspoilt ivory will be cleaned and retained. This piano was sold in September 2016.
