Welmar Upright Piano (779)

Serial number: 50380. Sold by Whelpdale, Maxwell and Codd, in London, these pianos have interesting history as the factory was brought on by the second world war. As Bluthner agents, the company could no longer offer product nor conquer the anti-German sentiment of the post war era, so began producing their own instruments in keeping with the tone and quality of their historic counterparts. This piano was built in 1950, a time when their production was well established. Welmar has always been one of our favourite pianos and this one is no exception. The sheer quality of its parts and strength of its construction set it apart from many if it’s contemporaries.

This tall model Welmar has become an extremely well recognised piano and was built from war time through many decades to follow without change. This one is a beautifully figured walnut with incredibly modern lines considering its date of inception. The casing is finished in a hand polished oil and wax finish which gives a very natural, low sheen look, especially when used in such beautifully grained walnut, which is also easy to maintain.

The piano has a ‘tall piano’ rich and deep tone with a lively but not harsh nature. It has 88 keys – retaining their original ivory – and 2 pedals. The English pianos – for some reason – had the most beautifully fitted and finished ivory. The key touch weight is medium. The pianos dimensions are a height of 124 cm, a width of 142,5 cm and a depth of 58 cm.

The DE 779 Welmar Upright Pianoforte with stool will be available soon.
