Serial number: 501064. This Model U1 Yamaha upright piano was manufactured in Japan in the mid-1960’s. These model Yamahas are the most well respected: the toughest and well-made piano you’ll find! They have endless desirability in the trade and are a legendary upright. These earlier models have the rich mellower tone so sought after.
Seemingly at its leisure, this piano has been on a memorable journey… All original, it has an extremely interesting history as the dark rectangle on the top panel was caused by a plaque inscribed with details of this piano being presented in 1966 to the Jewish Orphanage at Arcadia, Johannesburg. The building that housed the orphanage was once home to Barney Barnato. It is now the home of Hollard Insurance on the historic mountainside of Parktown. We purchased the piano from an institution related to the Adventists, so one can only wonder at what this piano has experienced! However, the condition of the piano is beautifully original and shows extremely light usage. It has an American walnut, gloss casing.
The piano has 88 keys – with a firm touch weight highly attractive to serious musicians – and 2 pedals. The dimensions of this piano are a height of 121 cm, a width of 150.5 cm and a depth of 63cm.
