Welmar Upright Piano (762)

Serial number: 63322. This Welmar was manufactured in London in 1963.

This piano is fantastic! The sheer quality just shines through. Welmar is a really solid piano of top quality. To produce something like this today would be ridiculously expensive. Note the photograph of the back of the piano to get a sense of the craftsmanship and timber quality used throughout the piano.

The casing is of fiddle-back or flame mahogany. It has been repolished (prior to our purchase of it) to a very natural look and colour. Note how the edges where the veneering ends are lighter, framing the shape of the case. This is something beyond average.

The tone belies the pianos size, the bass is incredibly powerful and rich and the whole piano sounds like it just wants to play! The sound is rich and rounded. The piano has 88 keys – with a medium to firm touch – and 2 pedals. It has absolutely beautiful ivory keys. The dimensions are a height of 120 cm, a width of 143 cm and a depth of 58 cm.

The DE 762 Welmar Upright Pianoforte and stool is currently hired out.

    Interesting facts:

The first two numbers of a Welmar or Marshall and Rose serial number denote the 1900 build year.
    Welmar has a brilliant history.

The manufacturers, Whelpdale, Maxwell and Codd, were initially importers and agents of Bluthner pianos (manufactured in Germany) in the U.K.. This association obviously influenced the build of Welmar pianos and one can hear this in the more mellow tone, quite unlike other pianos manufactured in the U.K.
