Serial number: 1093687. This Model U3 Yamaha was manufactured in Japan in 1973 and had the much-desired high gloss black casing. Just in, this is a great rarity, being the deluxe, tallest model of Yamaha upright piano. It’s come from its original owner, who has retained the original delivery note of 15 September 1973, the key scarf and keys! Just amazing. The internals show no real wear at all.
The casing has had minor damage on the side and back of the top, so these photos are taken as it came in, prior to it being cleaned up and serviced. As with every older Yamaha, we need to replace the cotton loop cords in the action.
As per expectations with earlier Yamahas, the tone is sublime and rich, not tinny. The piano’s substantial string length makes it incomparable to any other Yamaha model in its depth of tone. A professional quality instrument indeed. The piano has 88 keys – with a medium touch weight – and 3 pedals.
The DE 709 Yamaha upright pianoforte and stool is available for sale.
